Understanding your own defaults

Under pressure, you do not choose. You default. Knowing your default is most of the work.

When things are calm, we all look thoughtful. Under pressure, a much older pattern takes over: some of us over-explain, some go quiet, some take charge, some disappear.

None of these are character flaws. They were useful once, in some earlier room, with earlier people.

The work is not to eliminate the default. It is to recognise it early enough to have a choice. "I am about to over-explain" is a surprisingly powerful sentence.

Look back at three recent moments of pressure and find the shared move. That is your default. Name it, and it stops driving unnoticed.
