Why we avoid the conversation we need to have
Avoidance is rarely about the other person. It is usually about what we are afraid the conversation will confirm.
Most avoided conversations are not avoided because they are complicated. They are avoided because they are revealing.
If you say the thing, you find out where you stand. Silence keeps every possibility alive, including the comfortable ones. So we wait, and call it timing.
The cost is quiet but real: resentment builds in the space where clarity should have been, and the relationship starts running on assumptions.
Start smaller than you think you should. One sentence about your own experience, not their character. "I have been feeling distant and I did not want to leave it unsaid" opens more than a prepared case ever will.
